Guerilla Campaigning and Beyond: Obama and Youtube

obamaBarack Obama’s presidency is a change for America, in more ways than one. Not only did Obama embark on a campaign journey like no other, thanks to his use of technology and information, but he will continue that legacy into his presidency. Obama used many tactics during the election, one of which was using Youtube as a way to connect with voters; this and all else he did worked to elect him to that highest of offices. Now, he will also use it to connect with his constituents during his presidency.

Youtube is a site most people are familiar with. Funny clips, bits of shows, and scary videos can be found on Youtube. The most alluring part about Youtube is that it allows people to post their own videos online, for all the world to see. Though this often has a downside, Obama used it to connect with and inspire the internet community. Posting videos of rallies, speeches, and chats, he was able to keep his audience informed and engaged.

Obama is taking Youtube to the White House. He will be the first president in history to use a website, such as Youtube as a mechanism for transparency; he will also use it to keep that connection with the American people. Obama’s people say they will also do video interviews and online questionnaires; all of this is supposed to make the Obama government more open to the citizens of the U.S.

All of this internet activity is serving a purpose, it seems. Barack Obama is reaching millions of young Americans like never before. That group helped to elect him president and he, no doubt, wants to keep those constituents loyal to his presidency. Continued transparency in the Obama administration will certainly serve to differentiate him from President Bush.

In a changing world, reaching the millions of discontented Americans the way Barack Obama did is one way to ensure winning an election. Millions heard his message and responded on Election Day. The future holds the key to whether Obama’s campaign techniques will be replicated successfully enough to make a more transparent, honest government.
